Issue 16-30: Charity
February 22, 2016
The number of charitable donors in British Columbia inched up (+0.2%) in 2014, to 694,870. Donors represented 20.3% of tax filers in B.C., with donations totalling nearly $1.4 billion, a 2.5% increase over the previous year. Nationally, the number of Canadians who reported donations to a charitable organization on their tax return in 2014 fell 0.5%, with eight provinces recording fewer donors. The decline was partly offset slightly by a rise in the number of donors in B.C. and Alberta (+0.2%).
Among those British Columbians making donations, the median gift was $410 well above the median donation at the national level ($280). Alberta ($440), B.C. and P.E.I. ($400) posted the highest median donation levels among the provinces.
