GED® For Candidates

Register for the Exam

Make plans to write your exam by submitting an application form along with the required fees. You can also include your desired date and location for writing the exam – this will be confirmed once your application is processed and approved.

Fees

Remember to include the first-time writing fee of $60 when you submit your application. This will prevent any delays getting your test scores, transcript and certificate sent to you. Overpayments under $10 will not be refunded. Cheques and money orders should be made payable to the Minister of Finance. Post-dated cheques are not accepted.

Prepare for the Exam

Some colleges and school district adult education centres offer GED® exam prep courses and study materials. You can also find various GED® preparation books at most bookstores and libraries – make sure to get the Canadian version, published in 2002 or later.

Write the Exam

You will receive specific location information and directions so that you can arrive to write your exam in plenty of time. On the exam day, one of the following pieces of identification must be presented to the invigilator before writing:

  • a valid piece of provincial photo ID (i.e. a BC Driver’s Licence, BCID or BC Services Card)
  • a valid passport
  • another piece of photo ID that also shows your signature, birthdate and current address

 Special Accommodations

If you have a special need that requires specific accommodations when writing the GED® test, please submit the Request for Special Accommodations form – be sure to read the instructions and fill it out carefully.

Receive Your Credential

Once you’ve written the GED® test, a transcript will be sent to you. If you pass all five tests you will also receive a certificate - your GED® credential. Find out how you can order additional copies of your transcript or certificate.

Rereads

You can request to have your GED® test paper(s) reread and receive some feedback on areas that need improvement. This can help study for rewriting the exam.

Reread Fees

Submit your request along with $15 for each GED® test to be reread. Overpayments under $10.00 will not be refunded. Cheques and money orders should be made payable to the Minister of Finance. Post-dated cheques are not accepted.
