Old Spences Bridge

Old Spences Bridge is at the end of its service life and was closed December 31, 2013 to ensure public safety. The Province has reviewed the options and determined that it is not economically viable to continue investing in this bridge.

While the Province recognizes there will be local impacts within the community, there is an alternate safe and dependable crossing nearby.

The ministry received feedback on mitigation measures which could help improve the connection to the Spences Bridge on Highway 1.

The projects that will be completed are as follows:

• Resurfacing of approximately 3.5 km of Highway 8 from the Curnow Bridge to the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 8, with improved shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists
• Construction of a pedestrian pathway on Highway 1, linking the north and south sides of Spences Bridge
• Improving Highway 1 signage to highlight community services and attractions (completed)
• Providing signage to recognize the significance and history of the Old Spences Bridge
