B.C. Back-to-School Tax Credit
Budget 2017 Update proposes to confirm the B.C. Back-to-school tax credit for the 2016 tax year. The B.C. Back-to-school tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit for parents of school age children to help with the cost of purchasing school supplies. The credit amount is $250 for each child, providing a tax benefit of up to $12.65 for each child. The credit is only available for the 2016 tax year.
You're eligible to claim the tax credit for the 2016 tax year if you:
- are a resident of B.C. on December 31 of the tax year,
- are a parent of a child who is aged 4 to 16 at the beginning of the tax year, and
- no other individual has claimed the credit for that child.
Claiming the Credit
You claim the credit when you file your T1 Income Tax Return. Enter the amount of the credit you are claiming on the British Columbia tax form (BC428).
