Personal Support Network

For those British Columbians who have physical, medical, sensory or cognitive disabilities, planning and preparing for emergencies and natural disasters can present additional challenges. Similar challenges may also apply to elderly people and populations that have specific needs.

The Importance of a Personal Support Network

There are several important things to discuss and implement with a personal support network prior to an emergency:

  1. Make arrangements for your support network to immediately check on you after a disaster and, if needed, offer assistance
  2. Exchange important keys and any relevant medical information
  3. Decide on and practice methods for contacting each other in an emergency - do not count on telephones working
  4. Show them where you keep emergency supplies
  5. Share copies of your emergency plan
  6. Agree to always notify each other when you are going out of town and when you will return
