1908: Juvenile Delinquents Act and Juvenile Courts Act

Last updated on October 1, 2019

The legislation established juvenile courts and introduced a social welfare model. The Juvenile Delinquents Act superseded Criminal Code provisions related to offences committed by children less than 16 years of age and remained in force until 1984.

The new laws resulted in the opening of juvenile courts and detention homes under municipal jurisdiction in Vancouver and Victoria.
