1913: Saanich Prison Farm (later known as Wilkinson Road Gaol and Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre)

The prison farm concept at Oakalla was applied in the creation of the Saanich Prison Farm on Vancouver Island.

In 1919, Mental Health Services assumed jurisdiction of the Saanich Prison Farm and renamed it Colquitz Mental Hospital. The facility was re-established as the Wilkinson Road Gaol (known as the Vancouver Island Unit) in 1964.

Expanded and updated through the years and renamed Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, this facility is currently one of two provincial correctional centres on the island.
