Aboriginal People and Communities
The term Aboriginal is a collective name for the indigenous people of Canada. It includes First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. Aboriginal people have distinct cultures, languages and spiritual beliefs. Canada has over 600 Aboriginal communities or bands. B.C. has the highest number, at 204 recognized bands.
The term Indian is no longer considered appropriate when referring to Aboriginal peoples in Canada. As the term is still contained within certain laws and organization names, you may see it used that way.
