Fuel Management Stocking Standards

Stocking standards provide the basic linkage between the harvest of a forest stand and the regeneration of a new stand. The purpose of a fire management stocking standard is to develop and maintain forest stand conditions that achieve fire management objectives. This commonly means reducing fire behaviour by reducing the likelihood of crown fire and/or fast-moving high intensity ground fire.

Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI)

The Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) is a suite of funding programs managed through the Provincial Fuel Management Working Group - including the First Nations’ Emergency Services SocietyMinistry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations and the Union of BC Municipalities. Grant administration is provided by UBCM.

The initiative supports communities to mitigate risk from wildfire in the wildland urban interface. The wildland urban interface is any area where combustible wildland fuels (vegetation) are found adjacent to homes, farm structures or other outbuildings. For the purpose of the SWPI, the wildland urban interface is the area within 2 kilometres of a community with a minimum density of 6 structures per square kilometre.

Applying for funding 2017

The next application deadlines are January 27, April 28 & October 6, 2017.

The Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) includes the following program areas:

  • Development or update of Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP)
  • Development of Fuel Management Prescriptions
  • Operational fuel treatment activities, including maintenance treatments
