Safety Standards for Technical Systems and Equipment

Providing safety oversight to reduce hazards and prevent accidents is important. While the BC Building Code sets standards for building, there are other safety standards for technical systems and equipment in B.C.

Technical systems and equipment include:

  • amusement rides
  • boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems
  • electrical equipment and systems
  • elevators and escalators
  • gas appliances and systems
  • railways
  • ski lifts and aerial trams

The Safety Standards Act and regulations set the guidelines for these technologies and the people who work with them.

The BC Safety Authority (external link) oversees the safe installation and operation of these technical systems and equipment. It does this through permits, licensing, enforcement, education and research.

Ten local governments are also involved in the administration of electrical (external link) or gas (external link) systems and equipment.
