Re: Portable Wheelchair Lift

With reference to your letter received on March 22, 1988, requesting approval of a Garaventa "Stair-Trac" portable wheelchair lift.

Where elevators are required by the Code, they must conform with a referenced standard, and form an integral part of the building structure. While we do not question the convenience of a device which is completely portable, and which facilitates the negotiation of stairs, we are unable to equate such a device to a permanently installed elevator. Under the circumstances we regret that we cannot accept it as an equivalent to the requirements in the Building Code, although we see no reason why it cannot be used in addition to an installation required by the Code.
