Livestock Tag Reader Rebate Program

The Livestock Tag Reader Rebate Program provides partial funding to eligible applicants, for the cost of new hand-held or panel readers, reader installation, related software, and related equipment training. Up to 70% of costs to a maximum of $3,500 will be reimbursed per applicant for all eligible items combined.

The goal of the program is to help producers address traceability issues and emerging national and international food safety and traceability requirements. The program targets livestock operations that have generated less than $30,000 in annual farm receipts for each of the previous two years, to help small livestock producers comply with anticipated federal government traceability regulations.

The program is funded by Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis until February 15, 2018.

Eligible Items

  • Rebates may be provided for livestock tag readers (hand-held or panel readers) reader installation, related software, and related equipment training
  • Materials, equipment, and/or services must be directly related to the facilitation of livestock traceability activities
  • Readers must be used for livestock traceability purposes
  • Readers must be listed on the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency’s (CCIA) Conditionally Verified Readers list
  • Software may have a broad range of abilities such as herd management capabilities, but must have traceability capability
  • Software must be used in conjunction with a reader
  • For standalone software to be eligible for rebate, applicants must already have a tag reader in place (with proof of purchase) and provide confirmation from either software or tag reader company that the two are compatible. Standalone software must also have the capability to report livestock traceability data to the tag administrator (e.g. CCIA).  
  • Training must be provided by equipment providers and be related to the implementation of traceability equipment and technologies
  • Equipment, materials, and services must be purchased between March 2017 and February 15, 2018

Ineligible Items

Ineligible items include, but are not limited to:

  • Taxes, computers, ear tags, load bars, and livestock handling systems
  • Stand-alone training

Eligible Applicants

  • B.C. livestock producers and 4-H districts.
  • Applicants must own, sell, feed, house, or care for cattle, hogs, sheep, bison, cervids, and/or goats in B.C.
  • Applicants must not have received previous funding for the same materials, equipment, and/or services from the On-Farm Food Safety & Traceability Program or the Post-Farm Food Safety & Traceability Program.
  • Applicants must be registered in the B.C. Premises Identification (BCPID) Program.
    • Registration for BCPID can happen simultaneously with this application.
    • 4-H district applicants can provide BCPID number of the location where they showcase their animals (i.e. agricultural fair, 4-H leader's farm)

Ineligible Applicants

  • Livestock producers or operations outside of British Columbia
