Standards Governance

The B.C. Health Information Standards Standing Committee oversees the establishment, and promotes the adoption of health information standards and specifications to enable information management and information technology solutions to work together. The committee is comprised of representatives from each health authority in B.C., the Ministry of Health, the Doctors of BC, academic institutions and practicing clinicians. 

The committee will support the successful adoption of health information standards in the province by facilitating alignment in areas such as nomenclature/terminology, code sets, code mappings, data format (e.g., ontologies for documents, date/time), conformance, communications and change management. It also provides overarching guidelines to organizations implementing standards.

Interoperable records that support accurate and efficient workflow while empowering providers and citizens to achieve better health and experience of care.

Mission

Develop and support a single, transparent source of sustainable health information standards with a governance framework that is founded on local, national and international experience. Health information standards will allow electronic health records and their derivatives to deliver better health, health-care experience and a high performance health-care system.
