Using PDFs

Know when to use PDFs and when not to in your web content.

The default for B.C. government content is web pages in CMSLite (HTML). Properly created and maintained web pages are easily found and navigated, accessible, responsive and show context.

Avoid PDFs. They require a custom application to create and edit. PDFs are often more complex to work with and less accessible.

Acceptable Use of PDFs

Only use PDFs for information that is

  • Static or version-controlled (report or form)
  • Historical and required for public transparency or legal reasons (contract)
  • Distinct and separate (manual)
  • Designed for print (map)

All PDFs published on gov.bc.ca must meet the B.C. government's accessibility standards.
