How do the shredders work?

Did you know that simply erasing or sanitizing your electronic media does not guarantee that all of your private information is non-retrievable? British Columbia is a leader in the protection of electronic data and has two media shredders that destroy electronic media beyond recovery.

  • The industrial shredder breaks down electronic media, such as hard drives, handheld devices and flexible media, to a particulate size of ¾”.  This is one of the only industrial hard drives shredders located in Western Canada.
  • The second shredder breaks down smaller electronics, such as flexible media, flash drives, cell phones, CDs and data tapes, to a particulate size of ¼”.

The security of your data is our primary concern. All shredded material is sent off for 100% recycling. Since 2007, Asset Investment Recovery has created over 20 tonnes (20,000 kg) of particulate. This material are used for energy processes or turned back into raw materials (which are then used to create new items such as cement, metal products, park benches, etc.).

Why is this service available to the public?

We believe that everyone should benefit from technology like this. The shredder helps protect people’s privacy and will also help divert thousands of data devices from the landfill.

Why do you charge fees?

Asset Investment Recovery operates on a cost-recovery basis. We do get some money back from the recycler, but this only helps to cover a minor portion of ongoing maintenance. The fees charged are minimal considering they must cover repairs, operational upkeep, labour time and shipping of the particulate.
