What is Site Selection?

Site selection is an in-depth analytical process used to help businesses make decisions about new locations.  Businesses use the site selection process when they are looking to:

  • Expand or relocate operations
  • Gain access to new markets
  • Obtain a competitive advantage

Site Selection Criteria

Each business has unique location requirements.  Site selection criteria are used to help consultants and business owners assess each community.  For example, an original equipment manufacturer in the aerospace sector might be looking for a site in the Pacific Northwest.  The business’s site selection criteria could include:

  • Distance to major airplane assembly facility
  • Availability of skilled labour
  • Quality of local technical and vocational training programs
  • Energy and other major operating costs
