The New Societies Act & Transition
The Societies Act came into effect November 28, 2016 and governs how societies (not-for-profit corporations) are created and run in B.C. The Act includes significant updates to allow for more flexibility in how societies operate, while still protecting the public interest.

Societies Online: A New Way to File
Most of the transactions and filings needed for your society are now completed through an online filing system called Societies Online.
When using Societies Online for the first time, you will need to set up a Basic BCeID account and have your society's Registry Key (password) handy before you start.
Don’t Have Internet Access?
Visit your public library, or hire a lawyer or other service provider to complete the filing on your behalf. You can also complete and pay for your filing at a Service BC location by using a community access terminal.
Concerned About Internet Security?
Government standards provide the same level of security as internet banking.
Transition Through Societies Online
Societies incorporated in B.C. prior to November 28, 2016, have two years (until November 28, 2018) to transition. This means setting up the required accounts to use Societies Online and completing a transition application. There is no charge for filing a transition application.

How Do I Get a Copy of My Society’s Documents?
Consider ordering a transition package to help your society complete the transition filing. The package consists of certified copies of the society’s constitution, bylaws and any registered amendments for a flat fee of $40.
Note: This package is optional. The documents are not consolidated nor are they in electronic format.
