Liquor Server Training (SIR & SES)

B.C. has two responsible beverage service programs to educate people about their legal responsibilities when serving alcohol and provide techniques to prevent over-service: Serving It Right and Special Event Server.

Recent Changes

Changes to Serving It Right as of September 15, 2015 and January 29, 2016:

  • Previous exemptions to the Serving It Right training requirement have ended and virtually everyone who sells or serves liquor to the public is required to hold a valid Serving It Right certificate
  • All new Serving It Right and Special Event Server certificates will be valid for five years, after which they will need to be renewed. Any current certificates without an expiry date will be deemed to have expired on September 15, 2020

Remaining Exemptions

  • Foreign representatives of foreign liquor manufacturers who serve liquor in B.C. are exempt provided they are under the supervision of those with Serving It Right or Special Event Server certification
  • Special event permit holders and managers at small events (fewer than 500 people) holding valid Serving It Right-equivalent certificates from other provinces/territories (such as ProServe in Alberta, Serve It Right in Saskatchewan, etc.) are exempt from the Special Event Server requirement
  • Servers who hold the equivalent of a Serving It Right certificate from another province/territory (ProServe in Alberta, Serve It Right in Saskatchewan, etc.) are exempt from the requirement. If the certificate does not have an expiry date, the certificate will be deemed to have expired on September 15, 2020, or 5 years from issuance, whichever is later

Please note: Licensees are responsible for ensuring that servers who completed training in other jurisdictions are informed about relevant B.C. legislation, such as the legal drinking age and terms and conditions that apply to their establishments.  Licensees and managers must ensure that photocopies of liquor service training certificates from other provinces/territories  are available for inspection by a liquor inspector or police officer at all times, just as Serving It Right certificates should be.

Although not required by law, LCLB continues to recommend that non-serving staff in licensed establishments (other front of house staff, etc.) also complete the Serving It Right training.
