Homeschooling

A familiar and comfortable place to learn makes education enjoyable. Creating an excellent learning environment involves surroundings that are calm, secure and fun – just like at home.

Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching offered outside the B.C. educational system. Typically, a family member delivers the entire educational program to children at home. Homeschooling programs are not:

  • Supervised by a B.C.-certified teacher
  • Required to meet provincial standards
  • Inspected by the Ministry of Education

Parents Should Consider...

Homeschooling comes with great responsibility – choosing this option means parents must provide and supervise their child’s entire educational program, including curriculum and learning materials.

Homeschoolers are not eligible to receive a British Columbia Dogwood Graduation Certificate.

Register Homeschoolers

By law, all children in B.C. must be educated, making it necessary for homeschooled children to be registered.

Parents who choose to homeschool must register their child by September 30th of each year. Contact one of the following B.C. schools to complete the registration process:

Note: Children in Grades 10, 11, or 12 may enrol in a distributed learning course and also be registered as a homeschooler.
