Use of the Word "University"

Private and out-of-province public institutions must apply to be able to use the word “university” for educational purposes.

Note: The criteria for this process are currently under revision – no new applications from B.C. institutions are being accepted at this time. Applications from universities already established in other jurisdictions will be accepted.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act prevents the:

  • Unauthorized collection, use or disclosure of personal information
  • Disclosure of information provided in confidence that would be harmful to an applicant’s business interests (e.g. financial, commercial or technical information)
