Creating a Rich Math Environment
To help your child succeed at math, create a relaxed and positive learning environment at home. This will help them:
- Feel more confident as they start to realize they can “do” math.
- Want to explore new methods and ideas for solving math problems.
- Find opportunities to practice what they’ve learned.
Encourage your child to think by starting activities that can be done many different ways. Be creative and find objects that will help them picture math ideas in their head. Be flexible and accept their use of different ways to solve problems.
Talk About It
Start conversations about math. Learn how your child is learning by asking questions that reveal their thinking and reasoning ability.
Above all else, be patient. Realize that each child develops mathematical thinking in their own way, which will take time.
