Curriculum

Provincial curriculum is defined by the Ministry of Education and is based on education standards – or Prescribed Learning Outcomes – which define expectations for what students should know and be able to do for each grade and subject area.

In addition to the provincial curriculum, school districts (for public schools) and education authorities (for independent schools) can develop local curriculum for subject areas where a provincial curriculum does not exist.

The Ministry also approves programs developed by external agencies such as International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement.
