Issue 17-81: Non-residential Building Investment

Investment in non-residential building construction in B.C. rose 1.3% (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter of 2017. Spending on new buildings increased in both the commercial (+1.2%) and institutional (+2.3%) sectors, but there was a marginal 0.2% decline in construction of industrial buildings. Non-residential building construction was up in Vancouver (+2.4%), Victoria (+4.2%) and Abbotsford-Mission (+8.3%), but investment in Kelowna fell 13.1%.

For Canada as a whole, investment in non-residential buildings edged up 0.3% in the second quarter. In addition to B.C., investment was up in five other provinces, with New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador leading the way (each +6.6%).
