Issue 16-236: Manufacturing Sales

December 15, 2016

Manufacturing sales in the province inched down 0.5% (seasonally adjusted) in October, mirroring a 0.4% increase in the previous month. Non-durables were off slightly (-0.3%), mostly as a result of weaker sales by food (-0.1%) and paper (-6.4%) producers. Makers of printing (-5.1%) products also saw sales slow. Lower sales by producers of many goods, including non-metallic mineral (-2.1%), fabricated metal (-0.9%) and wood (-0.5%) products acted to offset climbs in the primary metal (+1.9%) and transportation (+1.2%) industries, leaving manufacturing sales of durables lower (-0.6%) in October.

Canadian manufacturing sales slipped 0.8%, as sales fell in 15 of 21 industries. Manufacturers in Ontario saw the biggest loss in dollar terms, registering a 0.9% decline in sales.
