Issue 16-207: Bankruptcies

Year-over-year, the number of consumer bankruptcies in the province was notably lower in August (-21.9%). There were 342 bankruptcies in August, compared to 438 in the same month of 2015. B.C. bucked the national trend, as overall consumer bankruptcies climbed 4.1% over the twelve-month period.

Business bankruptcies in the province were down 9.1% compared to August 2015, while the number of Canadian businesses filing bankruptcy papers increased 10.5% from twelve months earlier. In total, 221 businesses in Canada, including 10 in B.C., officially folded in August.
