Issue 16-190: Building Permits

October 6, 2016

The value of building permits issued by B.C. municipalities jumped 15.9% (seasonally adjusted) in August. The increase was due entirely to more planned activity in the residential (+26.6%) sector. Overall, permits for non-residential buildings were off 7.7%, with declines recorded in the commercial (-4.3%), institutional and governmental (-5.0%) and industrial (-32.0%) sectors. Canadian permits were up 10.4% as activity increased in most regions, including the most populous provinces, such as Ontario (+7.2%) and Quebec (+20.6%). Newfoundland and Labrador (-23.1%) recorded the most significant decrease in planned projects in August.
