Social program officer

BC Public Service social program officers may identify and analyse social problems, conditions and trends and plan and develop social programs and services.

Officers may need to:

  • Provide advice and counselling
  • Supervise positions that provide care to children
  • Provide addictions treatment and prevention services
  • Develop care plans for persons with a mental health issues
  • Provide clinical social work services to individuals, families and groups
  • Plan and develop programs and recommend policies related to health services
  • Support hospitalized/institutionalized mentally ill patients or emotionally disturbed youths
  • Act as advocate for hospitalized/institutionalized mentally ill patients or emotionally disturbed youths
  • Act as officer of the court and as a peace officer for investigations, prepare reports, present information and carry out the terms of case dispositions
  • Analyse problems, conditions and programs within the field of corrections work
  • Plan for the community release of residents of correctional facilities
  • Act as a family court counsellor to provide mediation, conciliation, investigation and enforcement services
  • Provide theoretical and skills training in the above fields of specialization
